Breast Implants
With the rise of “explant” surgery, is the industry in decline?
A (Plastic Surgeon): Demand is shifting from large silicone to “natural” fat transfer and smaller, textured implants. Textured implants are linked to ALCL lymphoma, so we avoid them.
B (Safety Regulator): The problem was poor long-term data. We now require patients to sign decision checklists acknowledging BII (Breast Implant Illness), even if causation is unproven.
C (Psychologist): Social media drives both demand (IG model look) and explant (#breastimplantillness). Surgeons need to screen for body dysmorphia pre-op.
D (Patient Rep): I explanted after 10 years of fatigue. My insurance covered nothing. There is no registry to track my outcome. The system failed me.
